It sure does feel like 2021 has just been flying by, and though few would call it a banner year for cinema so far, we’re of course only halfway done.

As the world continues to slowly edge closer to normal and movie studios feel more confident about releasing their high-priced tentpoles and prestige projects alike, the second half of 2021 seems set to be jam-packed with quality cinema.

Picking just 20 upcoming movies from the several-hundred still set to release this year isn’t easy, but they represent the most ambitious, exciting, and star-studded that the remainder of 2021 has to offer.

From ambitious blockbusters to awards-baiting dramas, to the most expensive films ever designed directly for streaming, and an upcoming sequel we still know virtually nothing about, these are the 20 films to have on your radar this year above all others.

There may ultimately be disappointments among them, but there are sure to be over-the-odds surprises as well, and should ensure either way that film fans have plenty to discuss over the next six months.

Whether on screens big or small, and whether big-budget or not, keep your eyes peeled for these upcoming 2021 movies…

James Gunn makes a surprising leap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the world of the DC Extended Universe with this quasi-sequel to 2016’s commercially successful but critically-maligned Suicide Squad.

Armed with an R-rating and an outstanding ensemble cast – including but not limited to Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi – it is a film that effortlessly sells itself on paper.

The marketing so far suggests that Gunn will bring both his irreverent sense of humour and unique visual style to the table, for what’s hopefully a more coherent and character-driven follow-up to the troubled original.

Warner Bros. must be confident in it, given that a spin-off TV series starring John Cena’s anti-hero Peacemaker has already wrapped shooting.

The Suicide Squad begins its international rollout on July 30.
