Buckingham Palace was ‘unaware’ of the happy news of another royal baby until the announcement was made on social media, it has been reported.

The Palace have thus far declined to discuss when the Queen was told about the safe arrival of her 11th great-grandchild, who was named after her.

On Sunday afternoon UK time Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the birth of their second child – a baby girl called Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to her 7lb 11oz daughter on Friday in California, and both mother and child are doing well, Meghan’s press secretary said.

The name of the new-born is a special nod to the Queen as it was her nickname as a child.

While the news was given via a statement Buckingham Palace was reportedly only made aware at the same time as the rest of the nation.

According to the Daily Mail, Palace officials were not aware that the baby had been born until the announcement was made at 5pm on social media last night.

The publication reports that the Palace declined to discuss when it was the monarch was informed of the new family member or whether she was advised of the tribute of her name.

Announcing the news on Sunday the couple’s press secretary said in a statement: “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.

“Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”

It added: “The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”

The new arrival is a little sister for Archie, who was born in 2019, and a new cousin for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

She is the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild – the first of the monarch and Philip’s great-grandchildren to be born since the death of the duke in April.
