Casualty spoilers follow.

It’s been short but sweet, but Casualty fans said goodbye to Leon Cook tonight (May 1) as his time with the ambulance crew came to an end.

The paramedic, who joined the show earlier this year, was seen walking away from the hospital at the end of the episode, after being turned down for a more permanent role on the team.

But is this really the last we’ll see of Leon? Here’s a quick recap of what we know about his departure– and what happens next.

Why has Leon left already?

He’s only been on screen a few months, but Leon has now left Holby for pastures new.

The people-pleasing paramedic was left feeling dejected in tonight’s episode, when Iain pipped him to the post for a full-time position on the ambulance team.

Although Leon was initially hoping he was in for a chance thanks to his tips from Fenisha, he was disappointed to learn that the panel wanted someone with more experience.

That person in question is in fact none other than fan favourite Iain Dean, who swapped his role as a paramedic for the HEMS team 18 months ago.

After returning to Holby last month, Iain has grown concerned for his friend Jan amid her drugs-smuggling chaos.

Wanting to keep an eye on her, Iain decided to go for the position himself, thus piping Leon to the post.

All is not lost for Leon though as he was left touched to learn that Iain had put him forward for a job in London, to help him gain the experience he needs to work at Holby.

Leon’s final scene saw him walk away from the ambulance station in good spirits – hoping to return in the future.

Has Leon left for good and will he return?

Digital Spy can confirm that tonight was indeed Leon’s final episode, and there are no current plans to bring him back anytime soon. However, the nature of his exit means that the door has been left wide open for a possible return in the future.

Speaking about Leon’s exit, Casualty’s series producer Loretta Preece said: “It was an absolute delight to have Bobby Lockwood as part of our Casualty family and Leon was an instant winner with audiences for his loveable gauche personality.

“Leon leaves our paramedic team to gain some more experience in London and we really hope to welcome him and his inimitable smile back into the team in the future. In the meanwhile we wish Bobby all the very best.”

Bobby Lockwood joined the cast towards the end of last year, with his first scenes airing in January. Other than his paramedic duties and an initial struggle to make friends, Leon’s main story saw him become romantically involved with Connie’s teenage daughter Grace – unaware that she was only 16.
