Comedian Fin Taylor has been slammed by Twitter users after joking that Glastonbury Festival should be “bombed” to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn supporters.
Fin, 30, made the gag on Friday night’s episode of Have I Got News For You, after host Victoria Coren Mitchell discussed Corbyn being re-admitted to the Labour Party.
Fin said: “I feel like we had an opposition for 19 days and now it’s over again, he just won’t stay in his box.
“My relationship with Corbyn is like Bob Dylan, in that I only hate him so much because of his fans.”
He then discussed how Dylan fans are “so dogmatic” about their view he is the greatest musician of all time.
Fin, who was on Ian Hislop’s team, said: “People who like Corbyn, it’s like, what, it’s 200,000 people in the Labour Party that are fanatics.
“So all you’ve got to do is, next year, bomb Glastonbury, hopefully Dylan’s headlining. Two birds, one stone.”
Fin revealed in a tweet ahead of the show that he discusses Corbyn and expected a backlash.
He said: “Back on HIGNFY tonight, 9pm BBC one. YES we talked about Corbyn, and NO I can’t WAIT to hear all your lovely feedback!!!!!!!”
His tweet was met with furore from Twitter users.
Journalist Dawn Foster wrote: “Joan Bakewell claims Corbyn “broke the law” on Have I Got News for You” & comedian Fin Taylor says he hates Corbyn supporters and would bomb 200,000 of them at Glastonbury, then “Ooh my week on Twitter will be fun.” Desperately sad, courting controversy cos no one’s heard of you.”
Writer Hussein Kesvani said: “Well, i guess it’s time for Fin Taylor to go on the Triggerpod-Spiked-Spectator-Question Time carousel.”
There were also calls to make a complain about the bombing joke to the BBC.
Some users pointed out that when comic Jo Brand made a joke on Radio 4 about throwing battery acid at politicians she was investigated by the BBC executive complaints unit.
Jo, who made the joke after a milkshake was thrown over Nigel Farage, was ruled to have been inappropriate for the show.
Other annoyed viewers said the joke was not funny.
One person wrote: “Have you considered applying for Spitting Image?’ and Ross McCafferty tweeted: ‘Having watched the clip, I don’t think Fin Taylor is a stranger to bombing.”
Taylor has made no statement about his controversial joke.
