EastEnders and The Wall star Danny Dyer is never not interesting. The biggest Cockney geezer who ever Cockney geezer’d found out a few ago he was a descendant of royalty, and now he’s revealed that his own birth name was misspelt because his dad was “off his nut”.
Danny and his daughter Dani were chatting on their podcast, Sorted with the Dyers, about everything from playing too much FIFA, missing out on holidays, and Dani’s pregnancy, when he made the revelation.
Responding to a query (from 20 minutes in), the I Believe in UFOs star said: “I did change my name, didn’t I, because my name is Danial.
“My old dad, and I love him very much, he’s old school. I was born in the 70s so men didn’t really get involved in much. Back in the day, me mum would go, ‘I’m going into labour,’ and he’d be up the boozer and go, ‘What time are you going to be home?’
“So she went into labour and gave birth. He got up there, obviously off his nut, and he got to do the important thing, which is the birth certificate, which I think you have to sign. He agreed to the name Daniel but he spelt it Danial – D-A-N-I-A-L. I don’t know (why).
“It could’ve been a mix of things – that he was battered, that he doesn’t spell. It could’ve been a bit of both actually.”
Danny said that the name is on his passport and other documents, and had started to use Danny now and then before getting into acting game, which is when he properly became ‘Danny Dyer’.
Recently, Harry Redknapp revealed his desire to appear on EastEnders as Mick Carter’s sidekick, which we think could make for some great comedic moments, and we could all do with that the moment.
EastEnders airs on BBC One.
