And as Eamonn and Ruth try to understand the reason behind ITV bosses’ decision to give their usual Friday slot to another duo, sources have claimed the married couple believe the decision was to do with their age.
An insider told OK! mag: “The viewers love them, but Eamonn has said to Ruth he wonders if it’s because they’re both 60 and too old.”
“It’s a real shame, “added the source who asked if the couple were not ‘young or cool enough’ to present the daytime show.
“Ruth and Eamonn are both telly legends – they’ve done it all, so it seems unfair,” they mused.
Mirror Online has contacted Eamonn and Ruth’s reps and a spokesperson for ITV for comment.
Ruth recently made what appeared to be a thinly-veiled dig at Alison, who rose to fame on Big Brother, for getting a hosting job after starting her career on reality TV.
She told Mirror Notebook: “We’ve put the work in. We didn’t do a reality show and get an overnight job on the telly. We’ve come up through the ranks.
“Eamonn was only 19 when he started out. And he was doing the teatime news in Belfast during The Troubles.
“It was heavy stuff. And he’s now got an OBE for services to broadcasting,” she added.
Ruth and Eamonn seemed to be blindsided by their sacking as just days before the switch-up was reported, Ruth gave an interview where she said she was not worried losing her job.
During a chat with new! magazine, Ruth said: “There’s always talk, I don’t know. Not that anybody’s told me. I think I am very good at what I do, and as long as they want me I’ll be there.
“I’ve been doing it a very long time and it seems we’ve been very popular, so I presume all those things will be taken into consideration.”
