EastEnders has announced the recasting of Denise Fox’s daughter Chelsea, with a former Coronation Street star taking over the role.

Chelsea, last seen in August 2010, will return to Walford for the first time in ten years later this year, this time played by Zaraah Abrahams. Tiana Benjamin portrayed the character originally.

Zaraah is known for her role as Joanne Jackson on Coronation Street between 2005 and 2007, and starred in Spike Lee’s 2014 film Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. She also competed on Dancing on Ice during the 2008 series (where she came in third place) and 2014’s All-Stars run.

Chelsea’s return storyline has yet to be revealed, but there promises to be plenty of drama when she makes her comeback.

Her original departure saw the character leaving for Spain with Liz Turner, as she struggled with her father Lucas Johnson being exposed as a serial killer.

“I am so excited to be joining such an iconic show, and I am really looking forward to taking on the role of Chelsea Fox,” Zaraah said.

Executive producer Jon Sen shared his delight of both Chelsea’s imminent return and Zaraah’s casting.

“When Chelsea was around, trouble was never far away and that is as true as ever when she returns to Walford later this year,” he said. “We are excited that fans are going to see Chelsea back on their screens and thrilled that the wonderful Zaraah is going to play her.”

Chelsea isn’t the only member of Denise’s family who will be returning to Albert Square in the near future.

Earlier this month, the BBC soap revealed that Don Gilet will be reprising his role as Lucas. Paparazzi pictures from this week show Lucas being beaten up in a car park as part of his return storyline.

EastEnders airs Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays on BBC One.
