The tongue-in-cheek suggestion was made by Charlie Lawson, Bev’s husband Jim McDonald in the soap.
Backing his pal who plays Liz McDonald, to win he said: “Well, maybe she is or isn’t a vegan. I couldn’t possibly comment. If it was a tactic, it meant you wouldn’t eat sheep’s b*****ks.
“So look I’m sure she is vegan bless her, I wouldn’t know but it’s not a bad ploy if animal penis is on the menu.”
Charlie, who has played hell-raiser Jim on and off since 1989, added that Bev could triumph but warned: “If you wind Bev up and you are in the wrong she will let you have it in the neck.”
I’m a Celeb hosts Ant and Dec said this week that Bev would be given meat-free dishes.
But she still needed a strong stomach in the Bushtucker Trial as these included disgusting vomit fruit, fermented plums as well as fermented tofu.
She later raised suspicions by appearing to eat butter, a no no for vegans.
Grim grub hasn’t been Bev’s only challenge. She revealed that before she went into the Welsh castle a routine hip
operation left her fearing she’d end up in a wheelchair for life.
Charlie said it was amazing she had recovered to take part in the ITV show:
“Somebody told me she was very poorly so I rang her and said ‘apparently you’re nearly dead’. She was fine. Things went wrong, but she’s tough. She’s loads better now. Fair play to her.”
He told how Bev had been in discussions with medics about taking part: “She’s been advised she can go ahead. If she wants to do it she will do it. People forget that Beverley is 63. I’m very proud of her.”
Asked about the other campmates, he said: “It’s been all about Shane, Vernon and Bev and that noisy guy from Radio 1, Jordan. I would have thrown him over that cliff. He is very brave facing his fears but I wish he would do it quietly.”
He said of Bev’s chances of victory: “There’s no reason why she couldn’t. Her kindness will come out and her strength. She’s a very sweet lady but there’s another side to her. If you rub Bev up the wrong way, she won’t only tell you to wind your neck in. She will wind it in for you. She’s a very nice girl and I love her to pieces. She will be patient up to a point.” Charlie said that he had twice been asked to take part in the show but said no: “They wanted me to lose my temper and get cross.”
He then confessed: “I am probably far too angry and sweary. You have to agree not do any of that before you go in. I get the impression it’s not like the old days.”
However Charlie says he could still have a role – after Bev asked him if to be the famous friend to ring up. He said: “I said of course. I’d be dead chuffed.”
Meanwhile Jordan North has told how he was “buzzing” after going underground to face his fears. The latest trial won him 12 out of 12 stars.
The Radio 1 DJ, 30, who has already endured The Viper Vault and Frights of the Round Table, was voted into the solo trial Trapped Door, despite his terror of enclosed spaces.
He pulled himself through the tunnel as 4000 maggots rained down.
They were joined by mealworms, crickets, scorpians, toads, water dragons and giant millpeads. EastEnders star Jess Plummer said: “We’re so proud of him.”
Bookies Ladbrokes have Jordan 7/4 favourite to be King of The Jungle.
