Jeremy Clarkson is returning to Top Gear six years after his exit to pay tribute to late motor racing driver Sabine Schmitz.

Sabine was a regular on the driving show for many years prior to her death from cancer last month aged 51.

The show is going air a special memorial episode in her honour later this week, and it’s now been revealed Clarkson, 60, will contribute along with his fellow former hosts Richard Hammond and James May.

In a clip from the show, Clarkson says of Sabine: “When she walked into a room it was as though everything just got a bit brighter and a bit louder

“She was turning everything up on your television until it was just (begins to shake) just like that – and that’s what five minutes with Sabine was like.”

Richard Hammond adds: “You watch those films with her in again and just watch her smile. And the great tragedy is I’m sure she had much more of that to share with us.”

The tribute also features James May, who remembers Sabine’s loyal fans, saying: “It’s the breadth of affection for her.

“It was everybody from hard-core Nurburgingers, who respected her enormously, to just households who watched Top Gear and just loved her because she’d turn up and slightly smash the place up and ridicule the rest of us.

“I think it earned her a huge number of fans.”

The tribute also features contributions from another former host Matt LeBlanc as well as current presenters Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.

Clarkson left the show in 2015 when the BBC decided not to renew his contract amid claims of a backstage bust-up over a steak dinner.

Hammond and May decided not to return to the show without their pal, and the trio reunited to work on The Grand Tour for Amazon.

Top Gear: A tribute to Sabine Schmitz airs Wednesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
