Kay Burley has expressed her excitement at returning to work for Sky News six months after she was suspended for breaching lockdown.
The 60-year-old television star, who previously fronted the breakfast slot for Sky, confirmed that she was finally returning to the studios on Monday June 7 and is ‘happy to be back’.
Her return to work came after she was suspended in December 2020 for breaking lockdown rules when celebrating her milestone birthday with friends.
Six months on, it appears that Kay is thrilled to finally be allowed back to work. In a cheerful-looking snap, the broadcaster donned a white dress and heels and appeared elated as she confirmed the news.
“See you on Monday. Hope you’re as happy as I am to be back,” she wrote on social media.
Several fans also told Kay that they were excited to see the television presenter back in her breakfast role, adding that it had been ‘too long’.
Last year, Kay was caught out for breaching lockdown rules when she threw a birthday dinner that saw ten people in attendance. She then briefly popped into another restaurant to use the toilet before getting a taxi home.
Following the ordeal, Kay issued a grovelling apology on social media in which she revealed that she had agreed to step back from her role with Sky for a short period.
“I made a big mistake, and I am sorry,” she wrote in a lengthy post. “I have today agreed with Sky News to step back from my broadcasting role for a period of reflection.
“It’s clear to me that we are all in the fight against Covid-19 and that we all have a duty to stick firmly by the rules.”
Kay is understood to have blamed the situation on misunderstandings in planning and organising the event.
In the lengthy statement at the time, she added: “It doesn’t matter that I thought I was Covid-compliant on a recent social event. The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake, and I am sorry.
“Some dear friends and colleagues – some of the most talented and committed professionals in our business – have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.
“I was one of the founding presenters on Sky News. No one is prouder of our channel’s reputation, the professionals on our team, and the impact we make.
“I very much look forward to being able to continue my 32-year career with Sky when I return.”
Kay also sent another tweet that read: “Evening everyone I want to apologise to you all for an error of judgment.
“On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid compliant restaurant.
“I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules.”
Kay has been hinting about her return on social media for quite some time now and appears ready to hit the ground running with her reporting.
