The Queen’s cousin has been jailed for 10 months after sexually assaulting a woman at his Scottish castle.

Simon Bowes-Lyon, 34, admitted forcing his way into the sleeping woman’s room at Glamis Castle in Angus, and assaulting her while drunk.

He is said to have repeatedly pushed her onto a bed and against a wall, forcibly grabbed her breasts and tried to pull up her nightdress in an attack lasting 20 minutes.

Bowes-Lyon, who is the Earl of Strathmore and Queen Elizabeth’s cousin twice removed, was also put on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years after a court heard had been assessed by experts as posing a ‘medium risk’ of committing more sexual crimes.

Sheriff Alistair Carmichael said the level of force, aggression and persistence was so serious there was no alternative to a custodial sentence.

The court also heard his victim had undergone ‘cognitive behaviour therapy’ in the wake of the attack and still had nightmares more than a year after the incident.

Sheriff Carmichael told Bowes-Lyon: ‘She had no sexual interest in you and had done nothing that could be interpreted by you to the contrary.

‘You went to her bedroom and persuaded her to open the door, pushed your way into the room, pushed her onto the bed and grabbed her hard on the nipple and tried to push her nightdress up.

‘You told her that you were going to f*** her and that she needed a shafting. You continued to pull at her and tried to kiss her. Throughout all this she made it clear she wanted you to stop.’

Even after she managed to get him out of the room, the terrified woman said Bowes-Lyon tried to get back in a second time.

The sheriff said: ‘She was afraid to the extent that she locked the door and wedged a chair under the handle. She was left shaking.

‘Even now, one year on, she still has nightmares and feels panic because of being sexually assaulted by you. It was made worse that you were her host.

‘You assaulted her in the face of repeated protestations to stop and you repeatedly prevented the complainer from getting away. The force, aggression and persistence you used are concerning.

Funeral Of The Queen Mother, Tuesday 9th April 2002 ............. ‘The sentence must reflect the gravity of this crime and the need for punishment to adequately express society’s disapproval.’

After pleading guilty last month, Bowes-Lyon said he was greatly ashamed for causing ‘such distress’ to a guest in his ancestral home.

He said he had ‘drunk to excess’ on the night of the attack, which he said was ‘no excuse’ for his actions.

He added: ‘I did not think I was capable of behaving the way I did but have had to face up to it and take responsibility.

‘Over the last year this has involved seeking and receiving professional help as well as agreeing to plead guilty as quickly as possible.

‘My apologies go, above all, to the woman concerned but I would also like to apologise to family, friends and colleagues for the distress I have caused them.’

Glamis Castle is the seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, the family which the late Queen Mother was part of.

Bowes-Lyon, who is a multi-millionaire landowner, described himself as a ‘farmer’ to police.

He walked behind Prince William during Queen Mother’s funeral cortege as a 15-year-old in 2002.

Known for his love of fast cars and holidays with reality TV stars, Bowes-Lyon was named one of the UK’s ‘most eligible bachelors’ by Tatler in 2019.

He was also a one-time Conservative whip in the House of Lords.

In June 2020, Durham Police contacted the Earl for violating Covid restrictions after a report said he travelled 200 miles to Holwick Lodge, Middleton-in-Teesdale, and was spotted by his butler buying newspapers.

In 2010 he was banned from the road for nine months after he was caught riding his motorbike at 100mph on a 60mph stretch of road.
