Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid did not hold back, as Matt Hancock appeared “incensed” that he and his team have not been thanked for saving lives amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Secretary appeared live on Good Morning Britain to discuss the government’s new plans to ease the lockdown in England – and claimed there had never been a ‘national shortage’ of PPE.

But Piers immediately grilled Hancock over the recent ruling that he had broken the law over Covid contracts.

Soon, the pair erupted as Hancock sighed and told the pair to let him speak – also suggesting his team should be thanked for their work with avoiding a PPE national shortage.

Piers soon stepped in to hit back at this, with Susanna also agreeing that there was a shortage.

But Matt claimed that while some areas were hit with lack of PPE locally, “thanks to his team” they were able to avoid a national outage.

Piers asked if he was going to apologise for breaking the law, to which Hancock said: “If I were given my time again and given the choice between doing work that saved lives or filing paperwork on the right date, I’d have done the same.”

Interrupting, Piers shouted: “Hang on, you could do both can’t you? Surely you can try to get PPE which we were short of, and also ensure your department doesn’t break the law.”

Hancock went on: “My job is to save lives Piers, and that is what we did… just let me answer the question. The demand for PPE went up 10 times so of course my team was massively stretched.”

Piers and Susanna challenged him over his claims there wasn’t a PPE shortage nationally, with him adding: “There were areas where it was enormously challenging.

“There were areas where there were problems, but we never had a national outage of it. We were very close to that, but we didn’t have a national outage of PPE.”

He added: “There were shortages locally, there was no national shortage because of the work my team did. I back them 100%.”

As Hancock suggested the team should be applauded for their work that “saved lives”, Piers raged over the UK death total from coronavirus, which is currently reported to be over 120,000.

Piers went on: “I find that an glib extraordinary response to breaking the law,” before accusing him of telling a barefaced lie by claiming they’d avoided a shortage in PPE.

At one point he rolled his eyes and made a noise, as Susanna spoke over him – with him shouting: “Let me answer the question Susanna, honestly.”

He added: “I think we should be on this show thanking my team, they worked so hard.”

Piers fired back: “If you wanna play that game with us, you and your team have resided over a woeful handling of this pandemic that has led to us having the worst death toll in Europe.”

He added: “So I’m sorry if my first thought when you come on is not to thank you and your team for their brilliant handling of this pandemic.”

In response to his team, Piers told him: “I’m really struck that you feel incensed that we’re not thanking you enough for your handling of this pandemic.”

Hancock hit back: “My team, actually, I was asking you to thank. I was asking you to thank the people who spent 18 hours a day, seven days a week for weeks on end to make sure that we’ve got the PPE that we needed and save lives as a result.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
