Known as East Africa’s powerhouse, coastal Kenya is the region’s hub for sea, land, and air transportation. Stretching along the Indian Ocean coast, Mombasa Port, which sees increased traffic each year, is the biggest port in East Africa. There are two railways in Kenya, both linking Nairobi with Mombasa. One is a meter gauge railway built in the colonial period in 1890’s. The other is the first new railway for Kenya in a century, a single gauge railway that is built according to Chinese standards. The two railways reflect two different phases of Kenya’s history, and show the progress of Kenya’s political and economic environment. In the documentary series Road to Prosperity, we stay focused on the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), as well as the opportunities that the railway brings to Kenya and East Africa.
