Sam Smith has told how they’ve been “chucked off” a dating app after fears were raised they were ‘catfishing’.

The siinger signed up to several dating apps in lockdown after finding single life difficult during the pandemic.

But Sam, who has asked to be referred to as they after coming out as gender neutral last year, claims they were immediately “chucked off” Hinge because the company thought they were “catfishing”.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, Sam said: “I’m still single, I’m on the front line with all the single people still and it’s been difficult. I’ve gone on all the apps and stuff.

“They chucked me off of it after one night because they thought I was a catfish pretending to be me.”

Presenter Andy Cohen then advised the singer to try Tinder because it would allow them to be verified.

Sam said: “I need to, so I’m going to do Tinder!”

Hinge explained to Mirror Online that it thought Sam’s profile was fake.

In a statement it said: “Our community thought Sam Smith being on Hinge was too good to be true, and their profile was reported for being fake and impersonating them.”

It also tweeted Sam to apologise and promise to verify their profile.

It wrote: “Sorry @SamSmith! We know you’re too good at goodbyes but give us a second chance at finding you (+ @Andy) someone special. We will verify your profile”, with a winking face emoji.

Sam has insisted they are single despite being spotted taking a stroll through London in August and having a passionate smooch with furniture designer Francois Rocci.

Sam is not known for being shy about their feelings, and previously said they thought it was important to see same-sex relationships in the public eye.

“Seeing gay relationships is important and refreshing. You don’t see it loads,” they said in an interview with Radio 1.

Sam spoke out in relation to snaps that emerged of showing them putting on a very amorous PDA with then boyfriend Brandon Flynn.

“We were just waiting outside the shop while my sister got cigarettes. I was just joking.

“I was literally licking his eyeballs. It’s horrendous. I’m going to have to do something crazy to top it,” laughed Sam.

“He looks like Ursula sucking the voice out of Ariel. It’s so embarrassing,” they said of the kiss.

The pair split after nine months with Sam reported as being ‘devastated’ before they deleted all traces of Brandon from social media.

“This is the most significant relationship Sam’s ever had,” a source close to the pop star told Page Six, blaming their hectic schedules for tearing them apart.

Sam has been linked to a string of high-profile stars – including former Olympic diver Tom Daley.

After Sam collected the Oscar for James Bond theme tune Writing On The Wall in 2016, they spoke of being the first gay man to win an Academy Award.

Tom’s now-husband Dustin Lance Black then took to Twitter to slam the claim and make an explosive accusation about the singer.

“Hey SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here’s a start,” Dustin fired alongside a video of himself picking up the best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2009 for Milk.

After sparking a frenzy with his tweet – which prompted Tom to briefly take down his Twitter account – Dustin returned to the site to clarify what he meant.

“Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @Samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh,” he shared.
