This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby reacted with shock to the rumours that a ‘three metre rule’ on social distancing could be introduced to combat the spread of coronavirus, branding it “a push too far.”
The infection rates and deaths from COVID-19 have reached worrying highs over the past week, as the country was put into lockdown again.
And, after it was reported on Monday that the Government was facing pressure to tighten restrictions even further, it was publicised on Tuesday morning that experts from the Sage advisory committee want the guidance changed from ‘one metre plus’ to ‘two metres plus’.
The reports were denied by a Downing Street spokesperson who told the Daily Mail: “There are no current plans to change social distancing rules. However, everything is kept under review.”
The rumours were a hot topic on This Morning with Phillip, Holly and guests Nick Ferrari and Nicola Thorp dismayed at the speculation.
Phillip moaned: “Now there’s something else to worry about!” to which co-host Holly responded: “The problem is the World Health Organisation still saying up to a metre – nowhere else in the world is saying that?”
Phillip joked: “How long do they expect our sofa to be?!”
After Nick raised concerns about rumours being “seized on” as fact, Holly added: “We have a responsibility to report things based on fact; people are struggling, we don’t need to have space in our heads taken up with anything else – life is bad enough isn’t it without having to worry about untruths?”
Phillip then said: “There could be someone in the Sage office sat there saying ‘we never said that, it’s just a rumour!” And if they are saying it’s a good idea….NO!
“Three metres is a push too far! It’s a metre too far!
“Those businesses who have managed to cling on by their fingernails and will still be there when we come out of this; they have all set up for two metres!”
